Avinash Puchalapalli, MD

Adult Psychiatrist

Dr. Avinash Puchalapalli is an adult psychiatrist who brings warmth, careful clinical reasoning, and individualized care to each patient he serves.

Known for his thoughtful and adaptable approach, he works with patients to understand what may be contributing to their symptoms and develop a treatment plan that reflects both the evidence and the individual.

His interest in psychiatry developed through both personal experience and clinical training. Born in India and raised in Indiana, Dr. Puchalapalli saw how mental health challenges could affect people close to him and shape many parts of a person’s life.

During his early clinical work, he also saw how much of a difference it could make when patients understood their treatment options and felt involved in decisions about their care. These experiences helped shape an approach grounded in clear communication, curiosity, and collaboration.

Dr. Puchalapalli works with adults experiencing a broad range of psychiatric concerns, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma-related conditions, and substance use disorders.

He also has clinical interests in PTSD, addiction psychiatry, and psychosomatic medicine, including the ways physical health and mental health can influence one another.

His approach is grounded in evidence while remaining flexible to the needs of the individual. Before recommending treatment, Dr. Puchalapalli takes time to understand what a patient is experiencing, how it is affecting daily life, and what they hope will change.

He explains his reasoning, offers a clear recommendation, and discusses reasonable alternatives so patients can take an active role in deciding how to move forward.

Dr. Puchalapalli’s psychotherapy training, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, informs how he understands symptoms, patterns of thought and behavior, and the way those patterns can affect daily functioning. Depending on a patient’s needs, his work may include medication management, psychotherapy, or a combination of both.

When a patient is already working with a therapist, he is comfortable collaborating with that clinician so everyone involved in treatment is working from a shared understanding of the patient’s goals and care plan.

Dr. Puchalapalli completed his adult psychiatry residency through the New York Medical College program at Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital in North Jersey.

He earned his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and his Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University.

Outside of work, Dr. Puchalapalli enjoys cooking, exploring restaurants, hiking, visiting museums, spending time outdoors, teaching, and learning about astrophysics.
