Telehealth Psychiatry Appointments in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania

Virtual Psychiatry in NJ, NY and PA

Board-certified psychiatrists providing virtual mental health care from the comfort of your home

Please note: Only one of our psychiatrists is licensed in New York and Pennsylvania and can see adults ages 18–65. All ADHD evaluations must be completed in person.

Telehealth psychiatry at Kolli Psychiatric & Associates provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and medication management via secure, HIPAA-compliant video appointments. All of our board-certified psychiatrists are licensed in New Jersey and available for telehealth throughout the state. We also have a psychiatrist licensed in New York and Pennsylvania for patients in those states. Our psychiatrists offer the same expert care through telehealth as they do in-person—including thorough evaluations, accurate diagnosis, medication management, and ongoing treatment for anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, postpartum depression, PMDD, and other psychiatric conditions.

All of our providers are psychiatrists with medical degrees and specialized training. Most patients receive a clear diagnosis and personalized treatment plan at the first telehealth visit, including prescriptions sent electronically to their pharmacy when clinically appropriate.

Telehealth psychiatry eliminates barriers to mental health care—no commute, no waiting room, no time off work, and no childcare arrangements needed. Whether you’re a busy professional in Manhattan, a new mother in Red Bank who can’t easily leave the house, a college student in Pennsylvania juggling classes and appointments, or simply someone who prefers the privacy and convenience of meeting with your psychiatrist from home, telehealth makes expert psychiatric care accessible. Many patients find telehealth appointments less stressful than in-person visits and appreciate the flexibility to schedule early morning, evening, or lunch break appointments.

Our telehealth services are available throughout New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania for both initial evaluations and ongoing medication management.

What to Expect at Your Telehealth Psychiatry Appointment

A telehealth psychiatry appointment is clinically equivalent to an in-person visit—you’ll receive the same thorough evaluation, expert diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment recommendations. The only difference is that you’re meeting with your psychiatrist via secure video instead of in our office.

Before your appointment:

  • You’ll receive a secure video link via email from our HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform
  • Test your internet connection, camera, and microphone in advance
  • Find a private, quiet space where you can talk freely without interruption
  • Have your insurance card, medication list, and any relevant medical records ready
  • For parents scheduling for children or teens, ensure you have privacy for the parent interview portion

During your appointment:

  • Click the secure link at your appointment time—no downloads or apps required (works in any web browser)
  • You’ll see your psychiatrist on screen and they’ll see you—just like a video call with better privacy protections
  • Your psychiatrist will conduct a comprehensive evaluation including your symptoms, history, current functioning, and goals for treatment
  • For initial evaluations, expect 60 minutes; for follow-up medication management, 20-30 minutes
  • Your psychiatrist can observe your appearance, affect, speech, and other clinical signs necessary for accurate diagnosis
  • You can ask questions, discuss concerns, and participate in treatment decisions just as you would in-person

After your appointment:

  • If medication is prescribed, it will be sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy within minutes
  • You’ll receive a summary of your visit and follow-up plan via your patient portal
  • Schedule your next appointment before logging off, or call our office later
  • Our team is available between appointments if you have questions or concerns about your treatment

Your psychiatrist will address:

  • Your current symptoms and how they’re affecting your daily life
  • Medical history, psychiatric history, family history, and current medications
  • Diagnosis and explanation of what’s causing your symptoms
  • Treatment options including medication, therapy referrals, lifestyle modifications, and other interventions
  • Medication recommendations with thorough discussion of how medications work, potential side effects, and what to expect
  • Follow-up plan and when to schedule your next appointment

Telehealth appointments feel surprisingly natural and personal. Most patients forget they’re not in the same room as their psychiatrist within the first few minutes.

Conditions We Treat Via Telehealth Psychiatry

Telehealth is appropriate for evaluating and treating the vast majority of psychiatric conditions. Our psychiatrists provide expert telehealth care for:

Anxiety disorders – Generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, health anxiety, phobias, and anxiety related to work, relationships, or life transitions

Depression – Major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and depression related to life circumstances or hormonal changes

ADHD in adults, teens, and children – Comprehensive ADHD evaluations are done in-person, we offer virtual follow-ups for medication management with stimulants and non-stimulants, and coordination with schools for accommodations

Women’s mental health – Postpartum depression and anxiety, postpartum OCD, PMDD and menstrual-related mood changes, perimenopause and menopause mood symptoms, pregnancy medication management

OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) – Diagnosis, medication management, and therapy referrals for all presentations of OCD

Bipolar disorder – Medication management for bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymic disorder with careful monitoring

PTSD and trauma-related conditions – Medication management for PTSD symptoms alongside therapy referrals for trauma processing

Medication management for ongoing care – Once established as a patient, most follow-up visits for medication management work perfectly via telehealth

Teen and student mental health – Anxiety, depression, ADHD, academic stress, social anxiety, and adjustment concerns in adolescents and college students

Men’s mental health – Depression, anxiety, work stress, ADHD, anger management, and substance use concerns

Telehealth is NOT appropriate for acute psychiatric emergencies, active suicidal ideation requiring immediate intervention, severe substance withdrawal requiring medical monitoring, or first-episode psychosis. For these situations, emergency room evaluation or higher level of care is needed.

Why Patients Throughout NJ, NY, and PA Choose Our Telehealth Services

Board-certified psychiatrists

All telehealth appointments are with board-certified, fellowship-trained psychiatrists with 12+ years of medical and psychiatric training. You receive the same level of expertise via telehealth as you would in-person.

Same quality care as in-person appointments

Telehealth appointments are clinically equivalent to in-person visits for psychiatric evaluation and medication management. Your psychiatrist can assess your symptoms, make accurate diagnoses, prescribe and manage medications, and provide ongoing treatment through secure video. Research shows that telehealth psychiatry is as effective as in-person care for most conditions.

Unmatched convenience and flexibility

No commute, no parking, no waiting room, no time off work. Schedule appointments during your lunch break, early morning before work, or evening after kids are in bed. See your psychiatrist from home, your parked car, your office, or anywhere private with internet access.

Perfect for busy schedules and specific situations

Telehealth is ideal for busy professionals who can’t take time off work, parents who can’t arrange childcare, new mothers who struggle to leave the house, people with limited transportation, college students away at school, or anyone who simply prefers the convenience of virtual appointments.

Privacy and reduced stigma

Some patients feel more comfortable discussing mental health from the privacy of their own home rather than going to a psychiatrist’s office. There’s no risk of running into someone you know in the waiting room, and neighbors won’t see you going to a mental health appointment.

Access to specialized care throughout three states

Our telehealth services allow patients in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania to access board-certified psychiatric care regardless of where they live. You don’t need to live near Red Bank to receive expert treatment from our psychiatrists.

Prescriptions sent electronically to your pharmacy

If medication is prescribed during your telehealth visit, it’s sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy—often arriving before you would have driven home from an in-person appointment. We can prescribe controlled substances (like ADHD stimulant medications) via telehealth in compliance with state regulations.

Continuity of care when life changes

If you start care in-person and move away, go away to college, or simply prefer telehealth after trying both, you can continue treatment with the same psychiatrist. Many patients use a combination—initial evaluation in-person, follow-ups via telehealth, or vice versa.

Secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform

We use industry-standard, encrypted telehealth platforms that meet all privacy and security requirements. Your appointments are completely confidential and protected.

Insurance-friendly out-of-network practice

Telehealth appointments are billed the same as in-person visits and are covered by most insurance plans’ out-of-network mental health benefits. We partner with Thrizer to handle your insurance billing, and many patients receive significant reimbursement.

Technical Requirements for Telehealth Appointments

Telehealth appointments are simple and require minimal technology. Here’s what you need:

Device with camera and microphone:

  • Smartphone (iPhone or Android)
  • Tablet (iPad or Android tablet)
  • Laptop or desktop computer with webcam and microphone
  • Most devices from the last 5-7 years work perfectly

Reliable internet connection:

  • Wi-Fi or cellular data (4G/LTE or better)
  • Video calls use about 1-2 GB per hour, similar to streaming video
  • Test your connection before the appointment to ensure it’s stable

Web browser (for computer/laptop):

  • Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge—no special software to download
  • For mobile devices, you may need to download the telehealth platform app (we’ll provide instructions)

Private, quiet space:

  • Find a room where you can talk freely without interruption
  • Use headphones if privacy is a concern with others in the house
  • Make sure the space has adequate lighting so your psychiatrist can see you clearly

That’s it! No special equipment, no complicated setup. If you can make a video call with family, you can do a telehealth appointment.

What if I have technical problems?
Our team can help troubleshoot before your appointment. If technical issues arise during the appointment, we can switch to phone for the remainder of the visit or reschedule if needed. We’re flexible and understanding—technology issues happen.

How to Get Started with Telehealth Psychiatry

Step 1: Schedule your appointment
Call our office at 732-655-4568 or book an appointment online. Let us know you prefer telehealth, and we’ll match you with a psychiatrist whose schedule works for your availability.

Step 2: Complete intake paperwork
You’ll receive intake forms via our patient portal to complete before your first appointment. This includes medical history, current symptoms, medications, and a few other forms.

Step 3: Test your technology
A few days before your appointment, please test your audio and video. This ensures everything works smoothly on appointment day.

Step 4: Join your appointment at the scheduled time
At your scheduled appointment time, your psychiatrist will call you directly through our secure telehealth platform. You’ll receive a notification on your device, and all you need to do is answer the call to connect. No complicated links to manage, no waiting room, no delays—just answer when your psychiatrist calls and your appointment begins.

Step 5: Receive your treatment plan and prescriptions
After evaluation, you’ll receive a diagnosis, treatment recommendations, and prescriptions sent to your pharmacy if appropriate. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled before you end the session.

Telehealth vs. In-Person: Which Is Right for You?

Both telehealth and in-person appointments have advantages. Here’s how to decide:

Choose telehealth if:

  • You have a busy schedule and struggle to fit appointments into your day
  • You live far from our Red Bank office or don’t have easy transportation
  • You’re a college student away at school or travel frequently for work
  • You’re a new parent who can’t easily leave the house
  • You prefer the privacy and comfort of being in your own space
  • You want more flexible appointment times (early morning, evening, lunch breaks)
  • You’re already established as a patient and need routine follow-up medication management

Choose in-person if:

  • This is your first visit ever to a psychiatrist and you prefer face-to-face interaction
  • You have concerns about privacy or technology at home
  • You are looking for an ADHD Evaluation
  • You want to meet your psychiatrist in person before transitioning to telehealth
  • You don’t have reliable internet access or private space at home

The good news: You can do both!
Many patients do their initial evaluation in-person and then switch to telehealth for follow-up medication management appointments. Others start with telehealth and later come in-person. You’re not locked into one format—choose what works best for each appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Telehealth Psychiatry

 1. Where can I find a telehealth psychiatrist near me?

Kolli Psychiatric & Associates provides telehealth psychiatry services throughout New Jersey, with select availability in New York, and Pennsylvania. All our board-certified, fellowship-trained psychiatrists are licensed in NJ and offer virtual appointments for patients anywhere in NJ. We also have one psychiatrist that is licensed in NY and PA for patients located in those states. You don’t need to live near our Red Bank office—you can access expert psychiatric care from anywhere in the tristate area with internet access. We treat anxiety, depression, ADHD, postpartum depression, PMDD, OCD, and other mental health conditions via secure video appointments.

2. Is telehealth psychiatry as effective as in-person appointments?

Yes. Research consistently shows that telehealth psychiatry is as effective as in-person care for diagnosis, medication management, and ongoing treatment of most psychiatric conditions. Your psychiatrist can conduct thorough evaluations, assess symptoms, make accurate diagnoses, prescribe and adjust medications, and monitor your progress through secure video.

The quality of care is identical—only the setting is different. Many patients actually prefer telehealth because they feel more comfortable discussing personal issues from their own home.

3. Can psychiatrists prescribe medication through telehealth?

Yes. Our psychiatrists can prescribe all psychiatric medications through telehealth, including controlled substances like ADHD stimulant medications (Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, Concerta), benzodiazepines for anxiety, and all antidepressants and mood stabilizers. Prescriptions are sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy, often within minutes of your appointment ending. However, state and federal regulations regarding telehealth prescribing and requirement for in-person appointments are subject to change and we comply with those changing regulations.

4. How do telehealth psychiatry appointments work?

You’ll receive a secure video link via email before your appointment. At the scheduled time, click the link and you’ll connect directly with your psychiatrist through a HIPAA-compliant video platform—no downloads or special apps required for most devices. The appointment proceeds just like an in-person visit, with your psychiatrist asking questions, assessing symptoms, making a diagnosis, and creating a treatment plan. If medication is prescribed, it’s sent electronically to your pharmacy.

5. What do I need for a telehealth appointment?

You need a device with a camera and microphone (smartphone, tablet, or computer), reliable internet connection, and a private space where you can talk freely. Most modern devices work perfectly without any special equipment. We use simple, browser-based platforms that don’t require downloads. If you can video chat with family, you can do a telehealth psychiatry appointment.

6. Is telehealth psychiatry covered by insurance?

Yes. Kolli Psychiatric & Associates is an out-of-network practice, and telehealth appointments are covered by most insurances. Most insurance plans cover telehealth mental health services under out-of-network benefits. We partner with Thrizer to handle your insurance billing, and many patients receive significant reimbursement. After meeting your deductible, you often only pay your copay for telehealth visits.

7. Can I do my first appointment via telehealth, or do I need to come in-person first?

You can absolutely do your first appointment via telehealth. Many patients complete their entire initial psychiatric evaluation virtually and may never need to come to our office. However, telehealth laws are subject to change and state or federal regulations may mandate in-person appointments at some point during the treatment.

Telehealth is appropriate for most first-time evaluations. However, if you prefer meeting your psychiatrist face-to-face for the first visit, you’re welcome to come to our Red Bank office and then switch to telehealth for follow-up appointments.

8. What conditions can be treated through telehealth psychiatry?

We treat the full spectrum of psychiatric conditions via telehealth including anxiety disorders, depression, postpartum depression and anxiety, PMDD and hormonal mood disorders, perimenopause and menopause-related symptoms, OCD, panic disorder, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and other conditions requiring medication management. The vast majority of psychiatric care can be delivered effectively through telehealth.

Conditions that are NOT appropriate for telehealth include active suicidal crisis requiring emergency intervention, severe substance withdrawal, ADHD evaluations, or first-episode psychosis.

9. Can I switch between telehealth and in-person appointments?

Yes, absolutely. Many patients do their initial evaluation in-person at our Red Bank office and then switch to telehealth for follow-up medication management. Others start with telehealth and occasionally come in-person. You can choose the format that works best for each appointment—there’s complete flexibility. You’re always seeing the same psychiatrist whether in-person or via telehealth.

10. Is telehealth private and secure?

Yes. We use HIPAA-compliant, encrypted telehealth platforms that meet all federal privacy and security requirements. Your video sessions are completely confidential and cannot be accessed by anyone except you and your psychiatrist. No recordings are made without your explicit consent. Telehealth is as private as in-person care—arguably more so since there’s no waiting room where someone might see you.

11. What if I have technical problems during my appointment?

Technical issues occasionally happen. If your video freezes or disconnects, we’ll call you on the phone to continue the appointment. If we can’t resolve the issue, we’ll reschedule without charge. Our team can help troubleshoot common problems before your appointment. Most technical issues are simple (weak Wi-Fi, browser compatibility) and easy to fix.

12. Can children and teens do telehealth psychiatry appointments?

Yes. Telehealth works very well for child and teen psychiatry, especially for adolescents who may feel more comfortable in their own environment. For younger children, parents should be available to assist with technology and provide developmental history. Many teens actually prefer telehealth because it feels less formal and they can attend appointments without missing school or having transportation issues.

13. Can I get ADHD medication through telehealth?

Yes, with some requirements for stimulant medications. If your treatment plan includes stimulant medications (Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, Concerta), federal refulations require an inital in-person evaluation and periodic in-person visits every few months. Between those in-person appointments, follow-up visits can be conducted via telehealth.

Non-stimulants ADHD medications (Strattera, Intuniv, Qelbree) can be perscribed and managed entirely through telehealth after an inital appointment.

ADHD medication management via telehealth is highly effective and convenient, especially for adults and college students. We can also provide documentation for school or work accommodations.

14. Can I do postpartum depression treatment through telehealth?

Absolutely. Telehealth is ideal for new mothers who struggle to leave the house with a newborn. We provide expert evaluation and treatment for postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, and postpartum OCD via telehealth, including safe medication management during breastfeeding. Many new moms find telehealth much more manageable than trying to get to an in-person appointment.

15. How long are telehealth appointments?

Initial psychiatric evaluations are typically 60-90 minutes. Follow-up medication management appointments are 20-30 minutes. The length is the same whether in-person or via telehealth. We never rush appointments—you get the same thorough care regardless of format.

16. Do I need to be in a specific state for my telehealth appointment?

Yes. All of our psychiatrists are licensed in New Jersey and one of them has licenses in New York and Pennsylvania. You must be physically located in one of the states that your psychaitrist has a license in during the time of the appointment. If you’re traveling temporarily to another state, we may not be able to provide care during that time. If you permanently move to a different state, you would need to establish care with a provider licensed in that state.

17. How do I get started with telehealth psychiatry?

Call our office at 732-655-4568 or book an appointment online. Let us know you prefer telehealth, and we’ll schedule you with one of our board-certified psychiatrists. You’ll receive intake paperwork to complete online, a link to test your video connection, and instructions for joining your appointment. It’s simple and straightforward—we guide you through every step.

18. Can college students use telehealth while away at school?

Yes. Telehealth is perfect for college students who want to continue treatment while away at school in New Jersey, New York, or Pennsylvania. You don’t need to come home for appointments—you can meet with your psychiatrist from your dorm room, apartment, or anywhere private. This ensures continuity of care and consistent medication management throughout the school year. You must be physically located in the state that your psychaitrist has a license in during the time of the appointment.

19. What if I prefer in-person but want to try telehealth?

You can always try both and see what you prefer. Many patients are initially skeptical about telehealth but are surprised by how natural and effective it feels. Others prefer in-person and that’s completely fine. We offer both options so you can choose what works best for your comfort level and lifestyle.
