Frequently Asked Questions about Adderall

Adderall is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for ADHD, but patients and parents often have practical questions that go beyond the basics.

Can Adderall expire? Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking it? How do you know if the dose is too high or too low? This FAQ answers common questions about Adderall, including safety, side effects, dosing concerns, appetite changes, medication combinations, and when to speak with a prescriber.

At Kolli Psychiatric & Associates in Red Bank, NJ, we provide ADHD evaluations and medication management for children, teens, and adults across Monmouth County, Ocean County, and throughout New Jersey.

Does Adderall expire?

Yes. Adderall has an expiration date on the bottle, usually one to two years after manufacture. After that, it can lose potency and may not work as reliably. Expired Adderall is not dangerous, but if your prescription is past its date, get a refill rather than using old tablets.

Can you drink alcohol while taking Adderall?

Mixing Adderall and alcohol is not recommended. Adderall is a stimulant and alcohol is a depressant, and the stimulant effect can mask how intoxicated you actually are — leading to drinking more than you realize. This increases the risk of alcohol poisoning, dehydration, and cardiovascular strain. Alcohol can also worsen Adderall side effects like anxiety, elevated heart rate, and poor sleep. If you drink occasionally, talk to your prescriber about how to do so safely.

Can a primary care doctor prescribe Adderall?

Yes, primary care doctors can legally prescribe Adderall, and many do. But because Adderall is a Schedule II controlled substance and ADHD requires careful evaluation, many prefer to refer patients to a psychiatrist — who can provide a thorough ADHD evaluation, fine-tune dosing, and manage co-occurring conditions like anxiety or depression. At Kolli Psychiatric & Associates, we offer ADHD evaluation and medication management throughout New Jersey, with offices in Red Bank serving Monmouth County and Ocean County, plus telehealth statewide.

Is Adderall the same as meth?

No. While Adderall (amphetamine) and methamphetamine are chemically related, they are not the same medication and do not work the same way in the brain. Adderall is prescribed at carefully controlled therapeutic doses under medical supervision, while methamphetamine is used recreationally at much higher doses that produce intense euphoria and significant neurotoxicity.

The comparison often comes up because both are stimulants, but taking Adderall as prescribed is nothing like using meth. This myth adds unnecessary stigma to legitimate ADHD treatment.

How do I know if my Adderall dose is too high or too low?

Signs a dose may be too high include feeling jittery or wired, racing heart, anxiety, trouble sleeping, or feeling “not like yourself.” Signs a dose may be too low include no real improvement in focus, the medication wearing off too soon, or still struggling with the same symptoms. The right dose should feel like clearer focus — not stimulation, not sedation.

If you’re unsure, take notes on how you feel through the day and bring them to your next appointment. At Kolli Psychiatric & Associates, we work with patients across New Jersey to fine-tune dosing through regular follow-ups.

My child isn’t eating on Adderall — should I be worried?

Decreased appetite is one of the most common side effects of Adderall, and it often improves after the first few weeks. Practical strategies include serving a high-protein breakfast before the morning dose (when appetite is still intact), offering calorie-dense snacks and meals in the evening after the medication wears off, and keeping hydration steady throughout the day.

Temporary appetite reduction is usually manageable, but persistent weight loss, growth concerns, or refusal to eat at all should be discussed with your child’s prescriber. Dose adjustments, timing changes, or a different formulation can often resolve the issue.

Does Adderall affect sex drive or libido?

Adderall can affect libido in different ways depending on the person. Some patients report increased libido, especially when first starting the medication — a side effect that often fades over time.

Others report decreased libido, difficulty reaching orgasm, or erectile issues, particularly at higher doses. These effects are usually dose-related and reversible. If libido changes are bothering you, talk to your prescriber — adjusting the dose or timing often resolves it.

Can you take Adderall with antidepressants?

Yes. Adderall is commonly prescribed alongside antidepressants when a patient has both ADHD and depression or anxiety. SSRIs (like sertraline or escitalopram) and SNRIs (like duloxetine) can be safely combined with Adderall under medical supervision.

The combination to avoid is Adderall with MAOIs, which can cause dangerous spikes in blood pressure. Combining medications should always be done under psychiatric supervision — at Kolli Psychiatric & Associates, we regularly manage patients on combined ADHD and mood treatment throughout New Jersey.
